August 2015 Book Haul

This month I decided to tell myself that I would not pay full price for any of the books that I bought. So, every single book on this list was either at a discounted price, or I found it on clearance. Not the best way of decreasing the TBR pile, but a helpful way for now.

In total I bought 16 books in August.

 Young adult:
  1. Maybe One Day by Melissa Kantor (hardcover)
  2. Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass #2 - hardcover)
  3. Nowhere But Here by Kaite McGarry (hardcover)
  4. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee (paperback)
  5. Say You Will by Eric Walters (signed paperback)
  6. Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo (Shadow and Bone #3 - paperback)
  7. Because It is My Blood by Gabrielle Zevin (Birthright #2 - hardcover)
Adult:
  1. Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks (movie tie-in paperback)
  2. The Movement of Stars by Amy Brill (paperback)
  3. When You Walked Back Into My Life by Hilary Boyd (paperback)
  4. The Crook Factory by Dan Simmons (paperback)
  5. The Book of Madness and Cures by Regina O'Melveny (paperback)
  6. Starter House by Sonja Condit (paperback)
  7. Red Rising by Pierce Brown (paperback)
  8. Parasite by Mira Grant (hardcover)
  9. Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult (paperback)
I usually get more books than this every month, but I tried to tell myself that since I have one year until I leave for university, I need to read more and buy less. Hopefully I will continue with that plan next month, but I keep telling myself that and it never happens!

September 2015 TBR

So, since I'm going back to school on September 8th, and it's my senior year of high school, I don't know how well I will be able to stick to a specific pile of books. I am an extreme mood reader, but I always plan on reading at least one or two specific books each month.

I plan on reading:
  • Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo (The Grisha trilogy, #1)
  • Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo (The Grisha trilogy, #2)
  • Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo (The Grisha trilogy, #3)
  • Extraordinary Means by Robyn Schneider
  • Say You Will by Eric Walters

I definitely plan on reading the Shadow and Bone, as I have never read the trilogy yet and I just got Ruin and Rising, which completes the trilogy. I may or may not get around to reading the whole trilogy, because I am doing a buddy read for Shadow and Bone, and we have yet to pick a set date to start reading. If we end up finishing it early enough into the month, I should be able to read the rest of the trilogy though!
None of these are final, because if I am not in the mood to read the first one, I won't be able to read the trilogy, so it will just depend on how I feel about reading this month!
I have never been able to set a monthly TBR for myself, so I really want to try and start one, even if just for a couple books a month to reduce my massive TBR pile, and to read some of the books I've had for awhile.

Posting

Hello everyone! I've realized that my posting is very all over the place, so I've decided that I will post at least two to three times a week. Once on Tuesday, when I will be doing a Top Ten Tuesday (if I don't run out of ideas), and hopefully once or twice more throughout the week, hopefully with either one or two reviews and something else bookish.

I'm hoping to get onto a schedule so that I don't need to worry about updating my instagram and my blog every second, and that will hopefully make it easier for me to work on it, especially with school starting in about a week and a half.

Review: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Title: Outlander (Outlander #1)
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Genre: Historical fiction/Fantasy (adult)
Pages: 850 (Mass market paperback)
Publisher: Bantam Dell
Publication date: June 2nd, 1992 (Original date - 1991)

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord...1743.
Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

The amount of praise that I have for this book is indescribable.
Diana Gabaldon managed to give every single thing anyone would ever want in a book in the first two chapters, then continued to do it throughout the entire book. She managed to write something so beautifully terrifying and brutal and lovely and intense that I have no words for it. She piled plot twist on top of plot twist on top of plot twist without it being too overwhelming, and she managed to hold suspense for just long enough that you don't throw the book across the room in frustration but end up in tears in about 10 seconds.
Her writing is so beautiful; it seems to just flow and come together naturally, without any thought. There are only so many ways that the 26 letters of the English language can come together, and never in my LIFE have I seen it done so perfectly.
She managed to include so much information as well; languages and history and facts without making it boring, but instead makes me even more curious about my own background and it makes me want to reach back into my family history so that I can see what my ancestors were doing in 1743.
Not only was this book beautifully written and so interesting history wise, it was also one of the funniest and most enjoyable books I have read to date. It had me cry-laughing, (as well as just straight-up crying) and made me wish I had my own Jamie Fraser (because who doesn't?!?).
Overall, 5 stars for this book is nowhere near enough, it deserves the highest of all praise, and more. Thank you, Diana Gabaldon, for writing this book and the rest of the series. I look forward to reading more about spit-fire Claire and her stubborn Jamie.

Review: Armada by Ernest Cline

Title: Armada
Author: Ernest Cline
Genre: Science-fiction (adult)
Pages: 355 (Hardcover)
Publisher: Crown Publishing
Publication date: July 14th, 2015

Zack Lightman has spent his life dreaming. Dreaming that the real world could be a little more like the countless science-fiction books, movies, and videogames he’s spent his life consuming. Dreaming that one day, some fantastic, world-altering event will shatter the monotony of his humdrum existence and whisk him off on some grand space-faring adventure.
But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little escapism, right? After all, Zack tells himself, he knows the difference between fantasy and reality. He knows that here in the real world, aimless teenage gamers with anger issues don’t get chosen to save the universe.
And then he sees the flying saucer.
Even stranger, the alien ship he’s staring at is straight out of the videogame he plays every night, a hugely popular online flight simulator called Armada—in which gamers just happen to be protecting the earth from alien invaders.
No, Zack hasn’t lost his mind. As impossible as it seems, what he’s seeing is all too real. And his skills—as well as those of millions of gamers across the world—are going to be needed to save the earth from what’s about to befall it.
It’s Zack’s chance, at last, to play the hero. But even through the terror and exhilaration, he can’t help thinking back to all those science-fiction stories he grew up with, and wondering: Doesn’t something about this scenario seem a little…familiar?

This book is completely, utterly amazing. I wish I could give it a million more stars, but sadly, five out of five will have to do for now.
I have so much praise for this book; the story is compelling, the characters are diverse and complicated (in a good way), the plot twists keep you on the edge of your seat.
Armada is the first Ernest Cline book that I have read, and one of my new all time favourite books ever, if not the best book I have read this entire year.

** CONTAINS SPOLIERS **

Zack is a very compelling character, with him loosing his dad before he could ever hope to remember him, and he grows up with a slight obsession over the father he could have had. It turns out that his father has been alive all this time, and the resulting connection between the two of them, even though Zack has never known him, is astounding. The two have so much in common, they connect immediately and they have an instant bond that is not forced at all.
Every single character in Armada is beautifully crafted; they all seem like they could walk right off the page and just fit right into the world as it is now.
The story is beautifully written, and has aspects that will appeal to everyone; the Wars and Trek references, the humour, the teenage anger and regret, the love between family and friends, and the power of people sticking together to protect what, and who, they love.
Armada is a beautifully crafted, amazing novel, and I will no doubt be reading it again and again, and enjoying it over many, many years.

About

Hello!
My name is Michaela, but I go by Mickey. I'm a 23 year old book-lover from Canada. I enjoy reading, writing, photography, watching movies, cottaging, and anything sporty or outdoorsy.
I have currently just graduated university with a degree in Earth and Environmental Sciences. Always feel free to reach out to me, I love hearing from people who share my interests and who love reading as much as I do!

Bookish facts about me:
  • I am a massive lover of books, and I always have been. Ever since I was little, I have always had an obsession with reading, and with collecting books (not to mention a *slight* obsession with bookshelf organization). Reading is such a massive, important part of my life, and I just can't imagine my life without my love of books.
  • I currently own over 1000 physical books, and am always collecting more because you can never have too many books!
  • I am one of the few people who just can't fall in love with an electronic book, either Kobo, or on my laptop or phone. I just love the feel of a new, physical book in my hands too much.
  • I read basically every genre known to man, but my favourites are high fantasy, historical fiction, contemporary/realistic fiction, science fiction, thrillers, mysteries, and graphic novels.
  • Some of my favourite authors are Laini Taylor, Cassandra Clare, John Green, Stephanie Perkins, Rainbow Rowell, J.K. Rowling, Agatha Christie, Diana Gabaldon, Maggie Stiefvater, Kendare Blake, and V.E. Schwab.

About my blog:
I created this blog on August 10, 2015, because I wanted to be able to reach more people who share my love and admiration for books and reading. I have written reviews of many books that I posted on my Goodreads account, but I found that I wasn't reaching as many people as I wanted to, so I decided to start a bookstagram and a book blog in order to share my reviews and my favourite books with other book lovers.
All of my book and graphic novel reviews are spoiler free, and any book to movie adaptations I review contain spoilers, so readers beware!

I post at least two reviews each month, and I also post other bookish-related things, and am always on the lookout for new ideas.
